“Who” or “That” for Pets
(애완동물에는 who나 that 중 어느걸로?)
인터넷에 개그글들을 보다보면 'A dog who thinks he is a cat (자기가 고양이라고 생각하는 개)'와 같은 식의 재미있는 문구를 보게 됩니다. 그런데 여기서 관계 대명사 who가 들어가는게 과연 맞는가...라는 의문이 드시는 분들이 꽤 있으실 거예요. 결론은 가능하다는 것입니다. 아래 글 참고하시면 나름 뚜렷한 가이드를 얻으실 듯 합니다.
『 The AP Stylebook recommends using the pronouns 'it' and 'that' for animals unless you know the animal’s sex or the animal has a name.
For example, if you were writing about a cat and you didn’t know much about it, you’d write something like “The cat that was stuck in the tree peed on the firefighters.”
If the cat had a name, you’d write something like “Fluffy, the cat who was stuck in the tree, peed on the firefighters.”
If you only knew that it was a female or you were just using pronouns, you’d write something like “The cat who was stuck in the tree meowed at her owner.”』
AP Stylebook (AP에서 발간하는 글쓰기 관련 가이드북)에서는 해당 동물의 성별을 알고 있거나 그 이름을 알고 있는 경우가 아니라면 대명사 it이나 that을 사용하는 것을 추천합니다. 예를 들어 당신이 고양이에 대해 글을 쓰는데 그 고양이를 전혀 모른다면, 당신은 다음과 같이 글을 쓰면 됩니다. "The cat that was stuck in the tree / peed on the firefighters."
고양이가 이름이 있다면, 이렇게 쓰면 됩니다. "Fluffy(고양이 이름), the cat who was stuck in the tree, peed on the firefighters."
고양이가 암놈이거나 대명사를 (이미) 사용하고 있다면, 이렇게 쓰면 됩니다. "The cat who was stuck in the tree meowed at her owner."
큰 방향에서 보면 애완동물의 경우 기계적으로 it이라고 보기 보다는 인격화할 수 있는 경우가 꽤 된다고 보시면 되겠습니다. 그 경우에는 who로 받을 수 있다는 것이고요. 또 이것은 문체의 이슈이기도 하기 때문에 어떤 연구자분들은 that으로만 받아야 한다고 말씀하시기도 합니다.
참고로 제 주변의 원어민들이 대화할 때 보면 누가 개나 고양이를 데려오는 경우 걔 이름을 물어보거나 성별을 물어본 후 그 이후 대화에서는 he나 she로 대화를 이어가는 경우가 대부분이었습니다.
